![]() ![]() ![]() There is just so much to love about every single aspect of what The Babadook manages to achieve, becoming a brutal yet beautiful look at what it takes to recover from losing those you love. Both performances are outstanding, giving the characters a real sense of humanity as they face greater horror. Even in the quiet moments, you feel completely blown away by the growing sense of dread and devastation that threatens to consume the family. An embodiment of both grief and fear, it lingers over the house in every single shot. It centers on a single mother ( Essie Davis) and her troubled son ( Noah Wiseman), whose home becomes a place of terror when a mysterious creature sets up shop there. – Adam ChitwoodĬast: Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel HenshallĪ modern horror masterpiece that finds as much terror in its visuals as it does its crushing emotional encapsulation of loss, Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook is as good as you have heard and then some. Director Karyn Kusama ( Jennifer’s Body) shows a masterful handle on tone and tension, and the story will keep you guessing right up until the jaw-dropping final shot. This is a contained horror film that plays heavily on psychological and emotional trauma as opposed to jump scares for blood spurts, and it’s all the better for it. But soon things turn a bit…strange when the host ( Tammy Blanchard) begins espousing about a group she and her new beau ( Haunting of Hill House’s Michiel Huisman) have joined. The story begins simple enough: a man ( Logan Marshall-Green) brings his girlfriend to a dinner party arranged by his ex-wife, which reunites a group of old friends. If you’re in the mood for a horror movie that will really mess you up but not in a super graphic way, then The Invitation is the film for you.
